He can no longer sue the league

Former Las Vegas Raiders coach Jon Gruden suffered a major loss in his attempted lawsuit against the NFL based off his resignation from the franchise in 2021 after an email scandal.

According to ESPN, a three-judge panel of the Nevada Supreme Court sided with the league Tuesday, saying he is subject to NFL arbitration even though he is no longer a league employee. Thus, that makes him unable to sue the league.

Gruden originally filed his lawsuit against the league in November, 2021, shortly after he was forced to resign from the Raiders. He had success in pursuing his lawsuit through the process. But Tuesday’s ruling is a major blow.

Had the lawsuit gone to trial, it could have been quite messy for the NFL because of discovery. Now, the issue will be conducted privately by the league and Gruden now basically has no chance of gaining the answers he was looking for.

In 2021, the emails were discovered through the NFL’s investigation of the Washington Football Team’s workplace misconduct, which included digging through over 650,000 emails.

Earlier in the legal process, a Nevada court ruled in favor of Gruden’s request for a trial was considered because he had a settlement with the Raiders after he suddenly resigned over the emails. Thus, because he settled his contract with the Raiders, it was no longer an NFL contractual issue and it was a legal issue instead of a league matter.

Yet, Tuesday’s ruling likely ends Gruden’s legal hope. Gruden, 60, has done some consultant work with the New Orleans Saints. Earlier this year, Gruden was announced as an advisor of an Italian team in the European League of Football.

His son, Deuce, is a member of the Raiders’ strength and conditioning coaching staff.
