The Mike Macdonald era officially begins on September 8th against a familiar foe.

It has been 130 days since we have seen the Seattle Seahawks play a meaningful game. And, yes, the 2023 season finale in Glendale, Arizona was meaningful, even if the Seahawks were 8-8 heading into that game and needed both a win and some “help” to make the playoffs.

Geno Smith & Co. took care of their end of things (barely), but landed on the wrong end of the conference’s fifth tiebreaker (Strength of Victory) and ended up cleaning out their lockers when they got back to Seattle.

Three days later, the Seahawks parted ways with the most successful head coach in franchise history.

Twenty-one days after that, they hired Mike Macdonald.

It seems as though most 12s, including this one, believe that was a good decision.

In one hundred fifteen days, the Seahawks will play the first meaningful game of the Mike Macdonald era.

And they’ll do it against a familiar foe . . .

The Denver Broncos.

Considering how many pixels Seattle writers have spent on the Broncos the past couple years, it’s a little surprising that the 2024 season opener at Lumen Field will be only the fourth meeting between these teams since the Seahawks destroyed the Broncos in Super Bowl XLVIII.

Overall, however, it will be the 58th game in the all-time series between these former division rivals.

The Broncos lead the series, 35 to 22, but the Seahawks have won three of the last four games (including playoffs).

It is way, way, way too early to start looking at matchups and making predictions about how the first game of the Mike Macdonald era is likely to play out, but . . .

It’s not too early to place a bet.

Shortly after the Seahawks’ 2024 schedule was officially announced on Wednesday, DraftKings Sportsbook installed Seattle as a 4-1/2-point favorite.

The Seahawks are -205 straight up whereas the Broncos are +170, and the Over/Under is currently 42.5 points.

For what it’s worth, Seattle and Denver combined for 33 points the last time they played a Week 1 game at Lumen Field.

Go Hawks!
