Let’s examine the highs and lows of Kansas City’s 2024 journey.

Now that we know the Kansas City Chiefs’ 2024 schedule, let’s take a way-too-early look at the best and worst games of the coming season.

Best games

Baltimore Ravens at Chiefs — Week 1

In 2023, the Ravens were considered the AFC’s top team. They earned that respect by winning the top postseason seed by a full game over all others. When the Chiefs arrived in Baltimore, it seemed like the conference championship was a mere formality; the Ravens were headed to the Super Bowl.

It would be nice to remember that the Chiefs clobbered an overconfident home team, but they didn’t. Despite pre-game expectations, the teams were matched pretty evenly; if a couple of plays had gone differently, Baltimore could have won.

So, for the Ravens, having their next game be against the team that unexpectedly knocked them out of the playoffs is a dream come true. By this time, the Chiefs are becoming accustomed to having every game be the opposing team’s Super Bowl — and it will never be as true as it was on the season’s opening night.

Chiefs at San Francisco 49ers — Week 7

What’s not to like about a Super Bowl rematch?

It’s too bad that the NFL scheduling algorithm doesn’t allow the league to ensure that if the Super Bowl teams meet in the following season, the game is a home game for the defending champions; it seems like winning the championship should give a team the right to host the rematch.

But wherever it’s played, there’s every reason to expect these two teams to continue to be very good in 2024. You can argue the 49ers didn’t have a great offseason, but they still have some great players — and, over the last five years, San Francisco has been in a pair of Super Bowls and four conference championships.

This should be a great game — and even better, Patrick Mahomes is 4-0 against the 49ers.

Houston Texans at Chiefs — Week 16

In 2023, the Texans were scarily good; I thought the Chiefs were lucky that Baltimore knocked them out in the Divisional Round. They’ve had a solid offseason; they’ll be a tough out in 2024.

So if Kansas City returns to the postseason — which we all expect — Houston will probably be there. Therefore, this regular-season matchup will be an excellent chance for head coach Andy Reid and his coaches to get the full measure of one of the AFC’s ascending teams. More likely than not, they’ll need that information in the postseason.

Unknown games

Chiefs at Cleveland Browns — Week 15

Cleveland head coach Kevin Stefanski has earned respect for what he’s done with a long-suffering franchise. He’s got good coordinators on his staff — and even grabbed former Tennessee Titans head coach Mike Vrabel as a consultant. He’s got a solid group of talented players. And yes… in the third year of his five-year, $230 million guaranteed contract, quarterback Deshaun Watson may finally start more than half a dozen games.

But if he doesn’t… who knows how things will go? Will Kansas City play a Cleveland team that has finally turned the corner? Or will the Chiefs return from Cleveland with an easy win? Impossible to say.

Chiefs at Los Angeles Chargers — Week 4

In one offseason after another, the Chargers have been declared the team to beat in the AFC West. And year after year, they haven’t been. They enter the 2024 season without some of their most reliable offensive weapons. But now they have head coach Jim Harbaugh. How will his presence change the equation? Can he make the team better? And if so, how long will it take?

So in the first of two meetings with a once-familiar division opponent, the Chiefs must step carefully.

Worst games

Chiefs at Las Vegas Raiders — Week 8

There are plenty of reasons to have confidence in new Las Vegas head coach Antonio Pierce. But he’s got a big job in front of him: cleaning up the messes left by previous head coaches Josh McDaniels and Jon Gruden — and previous general managers Dave Ziegler and Mike Mayock.

If you’re considering buying an NFL team, here’s an important tip: don’t hire head coaches or GMs because they’re good on TV. Otherwise, it could be a while before your new franchise is back on the rails.

Last season, the Raiders proved they could surprise the Chiefs. But in most games, they’ll struggle to keep up.

Denver Broncos at Chiefs — Week 10

One day, the deal that brought Russell Wilson to Denver may be enshrined in the Hall of Fame of bad NFL personnel moves. How can you tell? The players the team has brought in to replace the former Seattle quarterback are Zach Wilson, Jarrett Stidham and rookie Bo Nix. Of course, it might be that one of these quarterbacks could turn out to be pretty good. But it gives you a sense of the difficult job now faced by head coach Sean Payton.

That job won’t become easier by facing Kansas City twice each season. Like the Raiders, the Broncos proved in 2023 that they can find it within themselves to beat the Chiefs. But for both teams, their best chance to do that may now be behind them.
