Plus a couple of roster moves and an update on a couple of injured safeties.

The 49ers returned to practice on Tuesday, and we had our first scuffle of training camp. In my eyes, this is a good thing. Kevin Givens and Laken Tomlinson got into a bit of a shoving match during 1-on-1’s, while Dre Greenlaw and Elijah Mitchell had to be separated.

It’d be concerning if there weren’t any brush-ups during camp. These players have been facing the same guys for nearly two weeks now. It’s as simple as them needing to go against somebody in a different colored jersey.

Kyle Shanahan said as much after practice when he mentioned the 49ers are sick of going against each other. Kansas City comes to town this Saturday. Then the 49ers will practice against the Chargers on Thursday and Friday of the following week.

Injury news

Jalen Hurd was off to the side of the field rehabbing. That’s….not a good sign. The team had been easing Hurd into action, but that would signal that he had a setback. Hurd hasn’t done anything to warrant a roster spot.

Kyle Shanahan said Hurd “didn’t feel right” and “some things were bothering him” Tuesday morning, and that’s why he was working on the side. Shanahan said he hopes Hurd can consistently be back on the practice field before the 49ers have to make roster decisions. Kyle added that there’s “not a lot of time left.”

Jauan Jennings has looked like the player the team had hoped Hurd would become through a few practices. If this keeps up, it would be tough for Hurd to make the final 53. Trent Sherfield has all but seized WR3, as he’s receiving more reps than Mohamed Sanu as of late. Between those three, the 49ers should receive plenty of production.

Jaquiski Tartt and Azeez Al-Shaair were running on the side of the field. Don’t expect Tartt back anytime soon, though. Shanahan said that Tartt’s return is particularly close: “I don’t see it as day-to-day right now. It’s going to take some time.”

Al-Shaair is progressing faster than expected, according to Kyle Shanahan, so this is a good sign. They’ll need him, as LB Demetrius Flannigan-Fowles is in the concussion protocol. Jonas Griffith has lined up with the starters in both players’ absence.

49ers safety Tony Jefferson tweaked his groin and hamstring, so Shanahan expects the team to bring in safety help. Jimmie Ward, Tavon Wilson, Talanoa Hufanga, and Jared Mayden are the only healthy safeties left.

Samson Ebukam was back in pads today, but he did not participate in any team drills. The 49ers will take it slow with Ebukam after he dealt with leg soreness for nearly a week. This would explain why there was a new defensive lineman at practice.

Roster moves

The team has yet to announce any roster moves, but OL Senio Kelemente was not present at practice. Newly signed DL Shalique Calhoun wore No. 67.

The 49ers waived CB Mark Fields and signed CB Alexander Myres, a 2019 undrafted free agent from Houston. Fields got into it with River Cracraft on Saturday. That was his most memorable moment over a week and a half of training camp.
