The emergence of running back Elijah Mitchell last season set a new course for the 49ers’ running back room. Instead of mixing and matching different styles of backs, head coach Kyle Shanahan leaned heavily on Mitchell as the No. 1 back in 2021. That put them in a position to let RB Raheem Mostert walk and then get through the offseason with just a couple re-signings in free agency.

San Francisco may not be done adding competition at running back just yet, but it seems clear Mitchell is the leader of the group and everyone else on the depth chart will be battling for sporadic carries or third-down duties.
