This week has felt like a turning point in Matt Nagy’s tenure with the Bears. Not even just the offense’s putrid showing against the Browns. But everything that happened after.

With Nagy coming under fire for his usage of rookie quarterback Justin Fields and designing a game plan that resulted in the franchise’s worst performance in 40 years, everyone assumed Nagy would be doing damage control in an attempt to right the ship.

Instead, he’s stoked the flames of his own hot seat through a series of actions that has left fans, analysts and probably even those within the organization at a loss for words.

When Nagy said “everything is on the table” in regards to a change at play caller, he refused to say whether or not he had handed over play-calling duties to offensive coordinator Bill Lazor for the second time in a year.

When Nagy had the opportunity to put his confidence behind his young franchise quarterback after throwing him to the wolves in his first NFL start, he chose to make the starting QB a game-time decision in a sorry attempt for gamesmanship.

While it was encouraging to hear that Nagy welcomed suggestions from his offensive players in regards to the game plan for Sunday’s game against the Lions, there’s no guarantee those suggestions will be taken into consideration. After all, Nagy trusts in his offense and his game plan. He’s refused to adapt his offense to fit the strengths of his players — not just the quarterback — and it’s resulted in a dumpster fire of offensive execution.

Nagy’s actions this week seem almost unreal. Is it desperation or stupidity? The sad thing is we really can’t rule out the latter.

While many, including myself, were convinced a few short weeks ago that Nagy’s job was safe next year, last Sunday’s loss and the week that followed have us believing there’s a chance Nagy could become the first Bears head coach fired midseason in the franchise’s 100-plus year history.
