Bears QB Justin Fields isn’t taking a day off this offseason, even during vacation

While Dan Orlovsky has criticized Bears quarterback Justin Fields for having a lazy work ethic, the opposite couldn’t be more true as evidenced during Fields’ short time in Chicago. Fields has been putting in work since he was drafted by the Bears last offseason, and it’s already paying dividends for him on the practice field.

Following the conclusion of Chicago’s offseason program, where Fields impressed coaches and teammates, he told reporters that he plans to show up to Halas Hall two weeks before the start of training camp late next month. But even away from Halas Hall, Fields’ work continues.

Fields isn’t someone who likes to take days off, even during a break. If he’s not doing something that he feels is helping him improve, he feels lazy. So even as Fields prepares for a family vacation, you can bet he’s going to continue to put work in when it comes to learning the playbook.

“Just work out, study film, meet with Coach Nagy individually on Zoom. Most likely just talk about the playbook,” Fields said of his offseason plans. “Right now I have a base idea of what plays we have right now so just diving into that more and just focusing on the smaller details because when you have a big base of it, you can really start detailing each and every specific thing in a play and really get to know it like the back of your hand.”

While Fields won’t have an opportunity to win the job in training camp, the best thing for him to do is master the playbook and impress during the preseason when the live game action begins.

The plan might be to sit Fields behind veteran Andy Dalton to help his development, but the belief is that Fields will prove he’s ready sooner rather than later and should see the field at some point this season.

And Fields is making sure that, when that moment comes, he’s going to be ready.
