This is part of the trade off that comes with padded practices.

The Detroit Lions were back in pads on Tuesday for practice Day 12 of training camp and a few more players were added to the team growing injury list. Let’s take a look at the players who were currently banged up and update statuses where possible.

Unable to practice

  • RB Jermar Jefferson (Injured ankle on Monday)
  • RB Michael Warren II (undisclosed)
  • OL Tyrell Crosby (Grade-1 hamstring)
  • DT Nick Williams (COVID-19 list) was added Saturday morning
  • DT Levi Onwuzurike (undisclosed)
  • DT John Penisini (undisclosed)
  • CB Quinton Dunbar (personal issue)
  • CB Corn Elder (Injured on Friday)
  • WR Quintez Cephus (head)
  • WR Damion Ratley (undisclosed)

Jefferson appeared to avoid the dreaded high ankle sprain: “He’s got an ankle (injury),” coach Dan Campbell updated Jefferson’s status ahead of today’s practice. “He kind of got his ankle yesterday. He’ll be out of practice today, but we do not think it’s serious. Does it look like a high ankle? It’s low. I think he’ll be good. He’ll be out today for sure.”

Limited during practice

  • RB D’Andre Swift (groin) — Participated in walkthrough and stretches. No positional or team drills.
  • DT Michael Brockers (vet rest) — Participated in walkthrough, stretches and positional drills. No team drills.
  • WR Breshad Perriman (hip) — Dressed, went through warmups. No team drills.
  • OG Tommy Kraemer — Dressed, went through warmups. Not sure on team drills. Probably not.
  • CB Nickell Robey-Coleman (first day, acclimation period) — No team drills.

All of these players are trending in the right direction, with Brockers particiapting more than I’ve seen him do since the pads have come on. Swift was fully dressed in pads, but disappeared after warmups. Perriman also got back on the field, which is a great sign. Though not repping during team drills is a sign he’ll probably sit out the team’s preseason opener on Friday.

Appeared to be injured at practice

  • TE T.J. Hockenson
  • WR Chad Hansen
  • DT D’Shawn Hand
  • DT Kevin Strong

It’s a potentially brutal setback for the oft-injured Hand, who just spent Monday talking to the media about how he has worked hard to stay healthy. Hand said he has hired a personal chef to help him stay on weight—he dropped to 270 pounds last season in an effort to trim down, but is back up to 293 with proper nutrition— and is taking steps to properly prepare his body before physical activities, including “warming up correctly, making sure my muscles stay loose. Stretching, stretching a lot more, yoga, and core (exercises)”.

This latest injury is likely to increase the chip on his shoulder, something that has been growing with each setback.

“When you work so hard to try to stay healthy and things just don’t go your way, you just gotta get back up,” Hand said yesterday about the chip. “I’ve been blessed to keep having opportunities to come back. They believe in me. I’ve been doing things the right way, so things have paid off and that’s why I’m still here. I just want my talents to show. I want to stay healthy and I want to show y’all I can really do this. I can be a bona fide player in this league.”

Let’s hope Hand is back on the field soon, so that he can continue to make his case.

Strong limped off practice with a trainer just as the session was coming to a close. It’s unclear what happened or what, exactly, was ailing him.

As for T.J. Hockenson, he was banged up after having Jeff Okudah land on him during a physical play. Both players missed a few plays after that, but stayed on the field. Okudah returned in the next set of 11-on-11s, but I don’t believe Hockenson did, instead opting to stay on the sidelines the remainder of practice.

Increased participation levels at practice

  • Derrick Barnes (minor hamstring) — Looked to have his first full day in pads since last week
  • Jalen Reeves-Maybin — First practice in full pads of training camp
  • Tyrell Williams — Full practice
  • Alex Brown — Full practice
