Turnovers are brutal for any offense but can be the key to defensive success in the NFL, and the Houston Texans will need to generate as many as possible against the Miami Dolphins’ explosive offense in Week 12. The team is still searching for their second win of the season with just seven games remaining on the schedule, so they’ll need to make something happen fast to salvage whatever they can of their 2022 campaign.

Veteran cornerback Desmond King spoke to reporters this week about the impact that turnovers have on the outcome of games, and how his defensive unit can help secure victory for the Texans by forcing more of them.

“That’s our goal as a team,” King said of the ability to get possession back. “On offense we want to protect the ball. Defense, we want to get the ball for our offense. That’s just something that we’ve been stressing for the past year since I’ve been here. That’s going to be the goal. That’s going to be one of our values as a team in each and every game. We just got to create those turnovers on defense and on offense we’ve just got to protect the ball.”

It won’t be easy against an offense that is as disciplined as Miami’s, but if Houston’s defense can step up on Sunday, they could at least put on a show worth watching. The team made heavy investments in their secondary during the offseason, and with limited time to prove the front office right for that decision, Texans defenders may well be playing for their spots on the roster in 2023.

If they can find a way to impact the outcome of this game, Houston’s defense could prove to be an underrated amalgamation of talent that could be a strength of the team for years to come.
