Here is how all of the Week 7 results impact the Dallas Cowboys

Dallas almost had a perfect off week.

Stress-free football is the best, isn’t? Plenty of Dallas Cowboys fans enjoyed this past week of NFL action as their own team sat on a bye with a five-game winning streak behind them. The Cowboys will look to add to the streak when they return to action this week, but sitting back and watching everything else unfold was rather fun.

Obviously, the Cowboys did not play a game this past week, but they did still pick up a few victories. We put together a rooting guide as the week began that focused on things through one lens, but there are different ways that we can look at the set of results and how they benefit the Cowboys as Week 7 comes to a full and total close.

The NFC East almost went winless in Week 7

In the rooting guide that we put together we noted that we were still looking at giving each NFC East team as many losses as we possibly could. There has been a school of thought recently about a couple of matchups featuring NFC East teams, and that’s the Cowboys’ rivals are so much weaker than Dallas, that it would actually be more helpful to have them beat contending teams in the conference for the purposes of seeding, and if you subscribe to the latter then Week 7 worked out nicely for you.

The Philadelphia Eagles lost to the Las Vegas Raiders which was a lot of fun to enjoy. Back in the NFC, though, the New York Giants got their second win of the season against the Carolina Panthers, a team that has lost four games in a row now after traveling to AT&T Stadium with a perfect 3-0 record that now has them below .500. Dallas exposed the would-be Panthers.

It was the Washington Football Team that led to divided opinions for Cowboys fans as they visited the Green Bay Packers on Sunday. Washington lost which is good news if you were rooting for that, but Green Bay won which keeps them firmly near the top of the NFC as a whole. Thankfully the Packers will take on the Arizona Cardinals this week so one of them will suffer a loss as soon as Week 8.

You would be hard-pressed to find someone who thinks that the Giants pose a threat to the Cowboys this season, so you could also spin their victory as a good thing for Dallas given that it betters New York’s record and therefore will worsen their 2022 draft positioning, but that’s looking really far ahead. Nevertheless it is a reality.

As of now, NFC East teams look like they are going to hold serious draft capital

Among the teams that we noted we are rooting for were the Chicago Bears, Miami Dolphins, and Indianapolis Colts.

Chicago’s first-round pick belongs to the New York Giants, Miami’s belongs to the Philadelphia Eagles, and Indianapolis’ (assuming Carson Wentz plays 75% of snaps this season which seems likely) also belongs to Philadelphia. Only the Indianapolis Colts won which was a nice boost, but unfortunately so did the Tennessee Titans. It would be good to see that division tighten up and ultimately for the Colts to win it.

Ideally the Cowboys are going to have the 32nd pick in next year’s draft which is all that we really care about, but it certainly isn’t fun to imagine a draft world where so much capital belongs to division rivals. No team in the NFC East outside of Dallas has drafted particularly well in recent history so perhaps that trend could continue, but it was a bit of a bummer as far as Week 7 was concerned to see that happen.

All of the top NFC teams won in Week 7 which was not ideal, but not the end of the world

As noted there are some Cowboys fans who are focusing on what they feel is the bigger picture and starting to look at playoff positioning for this team, specifically where they can fall within the top four seeds.

Recently our own DannyPhantom discussed why finishing with one of the top three seeds specifically is important for Dallas and right now it looks like it could be quite the fight to do even that.

All of the contenders in the NFC (Arizona Cardinals, Green Bay Packers, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Los Angeles Rams) won in Week 7. If you consider the New Orleans Saints a low-level contender (you shouldn’t) they play on Monday night, but they do host the Buccaneers in Week 8 and successfully defeated them at home last year so hopefully that happens again.

Speaking of Week 8, the Packers and Cardinals will give us a World Series break on Thursday night and one of them has to lose unless there is a tie. This week could wind up being important, especially since the Cowboys themselves are back in action.
