Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes admits to pressing a little bit, but he knows what he needs to change

It is fair to say Sunday’s result against the Tennessee Titans was the worst loss the Kansas City Chiefs have suffered in the Patrick Mahomes era. Unfortunately, the same thing was said two weeks ago when the Chiefs lost to the Buffalo Bills 38-20.

There are plenty of reasons Kansas City lost. Before the game, if someone had said the Chiefs would score three points, it would have been a laughable suggestion. But that’s exactly what happened.

The defense wasn’t much better, as it allowed 27 first-half points. However, it did hold the Titans scoreless in the second half.

Nonetheless, when you keep digging yourself into big holes, the offense feels like it has to score on every possession. Following the game, Mahomes admitted to pressing.

“It’s kind of been one thing here and there each and every week,” Mahomes told reporters. “It’s not like a whole overarching one thing. [Sunday], it was probably me just pressing a little bit too early in the game — and then we kind of got down, and we were in that kind of mode where you no-huddle, which you don’t want to be in in the NFL. You can execute a little bit — but it’s hard to sustain drives. So, I just got to be better early in games, so we don’t get behind like we did today.”

Mahomes, who finished 20 of 35 for 206 yards and an interception, was asked what has prompted him to force things.

“I don’t know what prompted it,” he said. “I don’t know if it was just me trying to make things happen, but in this league, you kind of have to let things develop. You have to go through the process of making plays. It takes one play at a time. People talk about you can’t have a 14-point play. They scored early — I got to go through the process of just getting the ball down the field and not trying to do too much.”

With the Chiefs sitting at 3-4, there is a legitimate concern about whether this team can simply make the playoffs. That’s another sentence no one expected to see after Week 7, but here we are.

“At the end of the day, I just want to win, and whatever that takes, I’ll try to do,” Mahomes stressed. “I’ll look at this film, learn from it, and try to come out better on Monday night this week.”

That is when the Chiefs host the New York Giants.
