Las Vegas has a fourth quarterback in camp

Jon Gruden has got another toy. Let’s see how long this one will stick around.

The Las Vegas Raiders signed young quarterback Case Cookus on Tuesday and he’s already on the practice field Tuesday. To make room for Cookus on the 90-man roster, the Raiders released wide receiver Trey Quinn. He was an interesting player but there just wasn’t enough room for him.

Why a fourth quarterback?
The Raiders may need another arm for the preseason, so he joins starter Derek Carr, backup Marcus Mariota and third-stringer Nathan Peterman. Cookus will likely play late in preseason games. It will be interesting to see if he closes out Saturday night’s preseason opener at home against the Seattle Seahawks.

Let’s take a closer look at Cookus.

Age and hometown: Cookus is 25 and is from Thousand Oaks, CA.

College: He played at Northern Arizona. He threw for 12,082 career yards in college with 105 touchdown passes with just 21 interceptions

NFL experience: Cookus entered the NFL last year as an undrafted free agent with the New York Giants, He was with them in the offseason. Cookus spent parts of the 2021 offseason with the Denver Broncos and Minnesota Vikings.

Raiders’ ceiling: Gruden likes getting his eyes on quarterbacks. So Cookus has an opportunity. He hasn’t stuck around anywhere in the NFL yet. But if he has a good preseason and closes out training camp strong, perhaps Cookus can fight for a spot on the practice squad.
