Texans WR Chris Conley provides a big target in the passing game

Chris Conley has a lot to offer.

At 6-3, 205 pounds, Conley has a catch radius large enough to be a threat in the passing game. Throw in a little speed, and it is understandable why the Houston Texans thought they effectively compensated for the loss of receiver Will Fuller.

Offensive coordinator Tim Kelly told reporters on Wednesday what it is they like about Conley in the passing game.

“I mean, he’s strong,” said Kelly. “Like you saw the other night, he went up and made some big grabs on the sideline, strong hands, kept the ball away from his defender.”

The former Kansas City Chiefs 2015 third-round pick made his preseason debut for Houston in the 26-7 win over the Green Bay Packers at Lambeau Field. Conley hauled in a team-high four catches for 51 yards.

“He’s a big body,” Kelly said. “He’s running well, so Chris is doing a good job. You see him out here every day spending time with the quarterbacks after practice, which a lot of times doesn’t get talked about, but that’s huge with the trust factor between the quarterbacks and the wide receivers at that position.”

The Texans’ second preseason game is Aug. 21 as they take on the Dallas Cowboys at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas. Conley is expected to get a little more first-team work as Houston gets a longer look at their starters on offense.

“We’re looking for Chris to just continue on his track and come out and play well,” Kelly said.
