The Houston Texans take on the Green Bay Packers Aug. 14 at Lambeau Field for the two teams’ first preseason action since 2019.

What do the Texans hope to gain out of their first preseason game with the Packers? It isn’t as though the outcome of the game matters, and given how early it is in the preseason, there may not be much action for the first team.

According to coach David Culley, who will make his coaching debut, the staff will look at how the team responds to more organic situations, not contrived scenarios from practice.

“I want to see how they perform in the game-type situations,” Culley said. “We haven’t been in that yet. Our scrimmage was actually a manufactured kind of scrimmage. This right here, I mean, it’s live. It will be the first time other than the goal line that we’ve done where it’s going to be live.”

The first preseason game will also give the staff a chance to work on their game day communication and logistics.

“The thing that’s going to happen in this first preseason game, it’s going to be the first time as a staff we’re going to be able to do the game day thing about how we handle things, what happens from the press box, the communication,” said Culley. “And those kind of things will be the first time this group has all been together to do that.”

Regardless of what happens on the scoreboard, the Texans are hopeful they can have a smooth process on the field, on the sidelines, and in the press box at Lambeau Field Saturday night.
