1. This is when you figured maybe things will start getting better. Coming off a mini-bye against a Raiders team playing with an interim head coach that lost two of its last three games in a stadium packed with Eagles fans. Yeah, about that…. This wasn’t just a loss, it was an organization-wide embarrassment. Every scout, player and coach in the NovaCare Complex ought to be flat-out embarrassed to be a part of a franchise that could play such a pitiful brand of football. If you want to blame Howie or the coaching staff or the players, you’re missing the point. It’s all of them. It’s everybody. When you reach this level of ineptitude, nobody involved should be able to look at themselves in the mirror and not feel like they played a role in this disaster. They can’t score. They can’t call plays. They can’t stop anybody. When they finally do something right, somebody ruins it with a turnover, mistake or penalty. Top to bottom, a catastrophe.

“Honestly, it’s just not what it’s been. Obviously, you just have to play what’s being called, and when you’re so used to playing so aggressive the last, however many years I’ve been playing, it just changed. So, you can’t just be as aggressive, kind of got to play what’s being called.” Cox went on to say that he thinks they do need to be more aggressive up front, but that starts with him. He just has to be mindful, because sometimes he can play too aggressive and it gets him back into his “old ways” and can get them in trouble. “I don’t get paid to play screens, I get paid to sack the quarterback, play in the backfield, tackle. I don’t get paid to play screens. Get a screen, we get screened all the time, just get out of the stack and run to the football.” The veteran emphasized that he’s an aggressive player, that’s how he’s made his living, getting in the backfield and splitting double teams — he’s not used to double teams sticking with him three, four yards down the field. Cox said that it boils up into frustration, and being frustrated with 600-700 pounds repeatedly landing on you, and he’s going to want to do something about it.

1) The ‘One and Done?’ Award: Nick Sirianni and Jonathan Gannon. When the 2021 season began, if you were told that the Eagles would start their season off at 2-5, most realistic fans wouldn’t be very surprised by that. However, the brand of 2-5 football that the Eagles have played has been ugly, boring, often times illogical in terms of the coaches’ schemes not fitting the strengths and weaknesses of the players. The offense is predictable, and the defense offers no resistance whatsoever, almost by design. The Eagles will have an extremely soft schedule the rest of the way, which will give the staff a chance to show better results on the field than they have shown through these first seven weeks, but they have done very little to inspire confidence in the fan base that they are the long-term answer for this franchise. Would Jeffrey Lurie fire a head coach that he knew would need some time to grow into the job? If things don’t improve, he’ll have to weigh the benefits of having patience with a young staff vs. wasting further seasons if they don’t provide reason for hope.

Jeff Lurie cannot be a happy man right now. His proud franchise is one of the league’s big losers right now. You don’t want to be on a list with that group. No one should feel safe after the disaster of 2020 and the awful start to 2021.

What to know: This is the type of loss that can torpedo a season and get players to second-guess their coaching staff. The Eagles had several days of extra rest after playing on Thursday night in Week 6 and supposedly used that time to self-scout and make improvements on both sides of the ball. Yet the product on Sunday was the worst it’s been. The defense continues to play passively — it was pitch-and-catch underneath all day for Carr — while the Eagles’ offense stuck to a run-heavy game plan until late in the game despite trailing by a significant margin for much of the day. Coach Nick Sirianni & Co. appear overmatched, and the Eagles look broken.

Here’s the problem: They’ve offered little evidence that they’re capable of turning it around. The Eagles are not a good football team at the moment, and there’s nothing they can point to that suggests the rest of the season will be much better. Their offense is inconsistent. Their defense is toothless. They enter few games with a decided personnel or schematic advantage. Their strengths are supposed to be along the lines of scrimmage, but those groups have been hindered by injuries. If one’s looking for a reason for optimism, it’s that the remaining schedule includes Detroit (0-7), the Jets (1-5), the Giants (2-5) twice and Washington (2-5) twice. But with the way those teams are playing, they might be thinking that at least they have the Eagles on their schedules.

“Time is running out. We’re at a point in the season where we’re 2-5,” said safety Rodney McLeod, one of the veterans who addressed the team in the locker room after the game. “Of course, we didn’t want to be in this position but honestly time is running out and we have to make a stand and we have to make a push. It was just in my heart to say that and I know that at the end of the day we’re going to come back and we’re going to respond the way we should.”

Run game gets going: The Raiders had 119 rushing yards on 29 carries. They averaged 4.1 yards a carry and had a good push for most of the game. The Raiders went into the game averaging 3.3 yards per play, which was the worst in the NFL. Josh Jacobs had a solid start, but he left before the half with a chest injury. Luckily for the Raiders, backup Kenyan Drake had his second straight strong game.

Lots of buzz about Deshaun Watson to the Dolphins, and the lukewarm “Tua is our quarterback” from Brian Flores wasn’t enough to put a lid on the speculation. (Then again, Flores neither justifies nor debunks reports or rumors involving his players, so his lukewarm response to renewed Watson trade reports was par for the course.) But a collection of bad games by needy QB teams could crowd the field—making it very good for the Texans to get more than one team bidding for Watson. I do hear that Miami owner Stephen Ross is not pushing his football people to deal for Watson right now. Which is smart. It makes zero sense for a team to deal huge assets for a player when the team doesn’t know when the player will be able to play. Carolina benched Sam Darnold on Sunday in New Jersey. Flores got a suspect performance from Tagolovailoa. Philadelphia will likely be in the market for a quarterback in 2022, and Jalen Hurts has been underwhelming in his big chance. So there’s a market for a quarterback in several franchises.

Dolphins, Panthers are the Deshaun Watson trade destinations – PFT
The decision as to a final destination likely will be made by Watson, who has a no-trade clause and thus can veto any specific deal. Watson, put simply, has a decision to make. A decision is expected soon. It’s not impossible that someone else could get involved. At this point, however, it’s the Dolphins as the favorites and the Panthers as the next possible landing spot, with Watson being the one who will make the final call.

Arizona Cardinals overwhelm Houston Texans to move to 7-0 – Revenge Of the Birds
The Arizona Cardinals are legit. It never seemed like their offense was super in sync, but Kyler Murray was 20/28 for 261 yards and three touchdowns to go with a single interception. Rushing wise, the Cardinals made it look easy, finishing with 172 yards rushing, led by 81 yards by Chase Edmonds and 64 yards by James Conner. Oh, Conner had the only rushing touchdown of the game as Hopkins, Christian Kirk and newly acquired Zach Ertz each had one touchdown reception on the day.

Giants vs. Panthers: Four(ish) things we learned – Big Blue View
The New York Giants beat the Carolina Panthers 25-3 on Sunday, finally securing their first victory of the season at home. For most of the game it looked as though neither team was particularly interested in, or capable of, winning. We could say that the 5-3 score, which persisted for about 44 minutes into the game, was evidence of a titanic battle between the defenses. But watching the game, it was more the result of two beat up, bad offenses not being able to get much of anything going. As a fan of the sport, much of this game was just hard to watch. But still, a win is a win, and let’s see what we can take away from the game.

Much like training camp with the lat strain, Prescott will be brought along at a deliberate pace. We might not see Prescott practice much, if at all, this week but still play on Sunday night. As for what he did during the bye week? “Prescott spent most of the bye week in town and rehabbing at the team’s facility. Under the watchful eyes of director of rehabilitation Britt Brown and head athletic trainer Jim Maurer, Prescott has mostly worked out in the pool. He’s been able to do all of his footwork drills and running while in the pool, rarely on solid ground. That’s all to make sure he doesn’t aggravate the calf injury.”
