There’s no denying the fact that the NFL is among the most popular sports on the planet. The viewership statistics are there to prove that, especially when it comes to the Super Bowl. Each year, around 100 million people tune in to watch this game.

This is no wonder, considering the excitement and entertainment that American football brings. Apart from massive viewership records, the NFL is known for its sports betting culture. Many fans like to place occasional bets on the games and in a way, test their knowledge and have fun in the process.

When it comes to betting, punters now prefer placing bets online. After all, when they register at reputable platforms such as Betway, they gain access to tons of bet types. To add to that, they can claim tons of bonuses and promotions, which can boost their rewards. For example, new customers get free bets from Betway and they are usable on NFL games.

Now, you may be wondering what types of bets you can place on this sport. There are 3 basic types and they are moneyline, points and handicaps. They are explained below.

Moneyline Bets

Moneyline bets are by far the most popular bets on NFL games. You bet on the winner of a certain game. Here, you have two possible scenarios – the home team wins or the away team wins.

Allow us to explain by using an example. Let’s say that the Los Angeles Rams are playing against the Seattle Seahawks. A moneyline bet on the home team would mean that the Rams will win the game. In contrast, a moneyline bet on the away team means that the Seahawks will win the game.

The important thing to remember here is that the number of points, scorers and the exact result doesn’t matter. The only thing that matters is whether the team that you placed a moneyline bet on will win. If it does, then you win the bet. If not, you lose it.

Points Total

Those that want to take things up a notch and be more adventurous, can place bets on the number of points. Points total bets determine whether a game will go over or under a certain limit. Hence, you can place over or under points.

We’ll use the same match to explain this bet type. Let’s say that you want to place a points total on the Rams vs Seahawks game at an online bookmaker. The operator states that you can wager on over 39 or under 39 points.

Basically, this means that the total number of points scored by both teams will go over or under 39. If you place a bet on under 39 points and the result is 23-10, then you’ve won your bet. However, if the game goes over 39 points, then you’ll lose the bet.

Handicaps

Finally, we have the most complicated bet type of the 3 – handicaps. This is basically where the biggest action in NFL betting is. Handicaps are also referred to as point spread bets and with them, one side gains an advantage in points.

Here’s how this bet works. One side is given a “handicap” that it must overcome to win. This is a common practice when you have a strong favourite in a game. To increase the odds, you’re placing a handicap bet on the favourite. That way, the match will start with the favourite losing the game in your slip. That’s the obstacle that the team must overcome.

Again, we’ll use an example to help you get more familiar with this bet type. Let’s say that the Rams and Seahawks are playing and you’re placing a handicap of 4 points on the Rams. This means that the Rams need to win the game by at least 4 points.

Types of Odds, Explained

When it comes to placing bets on NFL games and any other sport, there are three main types of odds:

  • American
  • Decimal
  • British/fractional

American odds have plus and minus in them. Plus bets explain how much money you will win when you bet $100. Minus odds tell you how much money you need to wager to win $100.

Decimal odds represent the money that you win with a $1 bet. Finally, British or fractional odds are split with a slash. You divide the two numbers to determine how much money you would win.
