There was a lot to like about the way the Giants played vs. the Panthers

The New York Giants won their second game of the year sunday, defeating the sputtering Carolina Panthers, 25-3. New York won time of possession, outgained Carolina, 302 yards to 173, and was able to win the turnover battle.

The Giants offense was far from perfect in the game. There were several drive killing penalties that stifled offensive progression, another failed goal line sequence, and three drives that ended in field goals. There are certainly some things to clean up, but the Panthers’ defense is a respectable unit led by defensive coordinator Phil Snow.

Snow runs an aggressive defense that was ranked first in pass-rush win rate heading into Week 7. Jason Garrett, dare I say, won the battle of X’s and O’s. Garrett used Daniel Jones’ athletic ability in a variety of ways: zone-reads, read-options, as a receiver on the Philly Special, on move the pocket plays, and on a bunch of play action bootleg/rollouts.

The Carolina defense didn’t have many opportunities to pin its ears back on normal three- to five-step drops, and the Panthers were forced to read/guess too often for their liking. Jones did a great job on half-field reads and was able to get the football out of his hand quickly.

The play-action passing attack also worked against Snow’s defense where the second level defenders were a bit too aggressive in pursuit. There were several plays where the Giants made the Panthers pay for their aggressive nature. The Giants were also having success defeating the press man looks of this defense as well. I break down several positive offensive plays from the Giants in the video below.
