The Cincinnati Bengals didn’t go all-in on the offensive line this offseason, yet still spent enough in a smart manner to upgrade the unit in front of Joe Burrow.

But how much of an upgrade? And how does it compare to the rest of the units around the league?

Over at Pro Football Focus, Sam Monson looked at just that, ranking the Bengals 20th overall:

“Cincinnati’s offensive line has improved from a year ago, but the offense as a whole has taken a huge leap because the team elected to draft Ja’Marr Chase over Penei Sewell in the first round this offseason. Left tackle Jonah Williams has been the team’s best lineman, further backing up that draft decision, allowing just four total pressures over the first five games. Jackson Carman — selected in the second round — has struggled since getting on the field, earning a 32.3 overall PFF grade and surrendering six total pressures in Week 5 alone.”

Indeed, Jonah Williams has looked like a franchise left tackle. The same can’t be said for most other spots, as center Trey Hopkins has massively struggled after coming back from an injury and the revolving door at right guard hasn’t been inspiring. Veteran free-agent addition Riley Reiff, at least, has been an upgrade at right tackle.

Unfortunately for the Bengals, things might have to get worse before they get better. Heading into Week 6, Carman is on the shelf on the COVID list and rookie D’Ante Smith, who would usually get the start, has yet to practice before Friday. That would mean shoving someone like Trey Hill or Fred Johson into the fire at right guard.
