San Francisco looks to clinch the NFC West

“Mr. Irrelevant” Brock Purdy will look to make it three wins in a row when the San Francisco 49ers take on the Seattle Seahawks on Thursday Night Football — and he just might help out the New York Giants in the process.

Purdy, thrust into a starting role after injuries to Jimmy Garoppolo and Trey Lance, has thrown two touchdown passes in each of his appearances so far. Last week he posted a quarterback rating of 134.0 He is the first player to be selected with the final pick of the draft to complete a pass in an NFL game.

It’s the latest step in San Francisco’s resurgence as one of the NFL’s top teams. The 49ers enter Thursday with a six-game winning streak. They have won each of their last four games by at least 13 points, and last week demolished the Buccaneers, 35-7.

Christian McCaffrey had at least 100 yards from scrimmage in four of those six wins. Now, he gets a favorable matchup against Seattle’s 28th-ranked run defense.

As of Wednesday night, Purdy was listed as questionable with an oblique/rib injury. Josh Johnson would start if Purdy can’t go.

The Seahawks have struggled since beginning the season 6-3. They have lost three of their past four games, though all were decided by just one score. They’re coming off arguably their worst loss of the year: a 30-24 defeat by the Carolina Panthers.

Rookie running back Kenneth Walker is off the injury report, so perhaps his return will give the Seahawks a boost.

The 49ers would clinch the NFC West with a win on Thursday, leaving the Seahawks on the Wild Card bubble. If the Seahawks win, they could overtake the Giants in the standings if New York loses to the Washington Commanders on Sunday.

The 49ers crushed Seattle 27-7 in Week 2.
