Plus, some quotes about Trey Lance

Kyle Shanahan spoke to the media after the 49ers’ first preseason game: “Good first day. I didn’t want it to go perfect for him.” That’s Shanahan on Trey Lance, who started strong by going 4-7 with three drops. Lance finished 1-7.

Shanahan said what most of us thought about Lance’s first performance: There was some good, some bad. Jimmy Garoppolo spoke after the game and had this to say about Lance’s long touchdown throw:

“It was awesome. We kind of saw it something. Trey put a beautiful pass out there. It was really cool. It was cool to have fans out there, too. “You’ve got a couple different options. Trey picked the right one.”

Trent Sherfield on Lance: “He’s a young phenom. He’s going to be really, really good in this league. He looked very, very poised… he’s not shaken at all. He plays big in the moment.”

Chiefs’ head coach Andy Reid on Trey Lance: “You’re in good hands. Yeah, he’s a good player. He looked very poised, composed, and he had a nice play on the firecracker there that he shot down the field.”

Aaron Banks left the game with a shoulder injury and did not return. Shanahan didn’t provide any further updates.

Trey Sermon left the game with what the announcers called a shoulder injury, but he returned to the lineup.

The big news was rookie running back Elijah Mitchell, who was inactive. Mitchell has an abductor strain and will miss a couple of weeks. The 49ers are deep at running back, but Mitchell needs to get reps.
