Kinlaw won’t practice Wednesday, while Lance will be limited

49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan spoke to the media ahead of Wednesday’s practice to provide a few injury updates. Here are the players who will not practice today:

  • DT Kevin Givens (hip)
  • CB Emmanuel Moseley (knee)
  • WR Jalen Hurd (knee)
  • DT Javon Kinlaw (knee)

Shanahan said he’s holding out hope that Emmanuel Moseley will be available for the Lions, but he was not good enough to go today. Generally speaking, Shanahan doesn’t play guys who can’t practice two days. So, if Moseley isn’t going today, it’s unlikely he will Sunday. We’ll see.

Hurd is a candidate for the injured reserve. Shanahan said Hurd was fine after the Raiders game, and the team felt good about where he was. But he had a fair amount of pain three days after the game (tendonitis), and it continued. That’s when the 49ers realized they might “have to shut him down for a little bit.”

It’s the short-term IR, meaning Hurd would have to miss a minimum of three games. Expect Travis Benjamin to take Hurd’s place on the active roster.

Dee Virgin would take Moseley’s spot, but it’s to be determined who would start in his place. Based on the money, your answer is Josh Norman.

There wasn’t much of an update on Kinlaw: “I think Hurd’s is a little worse than Kinlaw’s. I’m hoping Kinlaw will be out there tomorrow. I’m not sure about Hurd.” Shanahan said he was more optimistic that Kinlaw would play Sunday.

QB Trey Lance (finger) will be limited. Shanahan said he’s “not sure yet” if Trey Lance will be available against the Lions on Sunday. The hope is that Lance can throw and take snaps during Wednesday’s practice. Shanahan said he expects Lance to do both.

One reporter asked Shanahan to name the starting QB. He wouldn’t. We know who it is. We don’t have to ask these questions.

Shanahan was asked about the progress of Dee Ford and Nick Bosa:

“I don’t plan on having pitch counts with guys… you have goals and plans on how many times you plan on being in personnel groupings… I love how they’ve looked in training camp.”

The team named their seven captains for the season:

QB Jimmy Garoppolo

RB Raheem Mostert

TE George Kittle

OL Trent Williams

DL Arik Armstead

LB Fred Warner

DB Jimmie Ward

No real surprises there, as these are seven of the best players on the team.

The official injury report should come out after practice. We’ll update anything once that is released.

The 49ers signed veteran LB Nate Gerry to their practice squad and released OL Corbin Kaufusi.
