Shanahan confirmed that Jason Verrett tore his ACL

San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan spoke to the media Monday afternoon to provide a few injury updates. First, Shanahan confirmed cornerback Jason Verrett has a torn ACL and will miss the rest of the season.

“I’ll believe in Jason until he doesn’t want to do it,” Shanahan said. The team is working with Verrett’s wife to bring her out to West Virginia, where Verrett will remain with the Niners on their current road trip as they prepare for the Eagles.

I asked Shanahan how aggressive the team planned on being in the cornerback market and how much of a challenge it’d be to find a quality player who could help the 49ers right away.

Based on this part of his answer, Shanahan’s aware of the situation the Niners are in: “Huge challenge. Just cause you lose people doesn’t mean that there’s a store you can go get some more at. We’re taking everything into account.”

Raheem Mostert will miss about eight weeks with chipped knee cartilage. Mostert will undergo arthroscopic surgery and will be placed on the injured reserve. That’s a brutal blow for the 49ers, even with the success of Elijah Mitchell.

Speaking of running backs, that’s around the same time Shanahan said the team expects Jeff Wilson to return. Shanahan said Wilson could return sometime between Week 6 and Week 8, saying, “I Know sometime he’ll be able to help us out this year.”

Wilson’s on the PUP list, so the earliest he could return is Week 7. Shanahan added that Wilson has looked good.

Shanahan is “holding out hope” that Emmanuel Moseley suits up Sunday against the Eagles. The 49ers need Moseley to play.

As for Javon Kinlaw, Shanahan was asked if he’s expecting him to play: “I’m not expecting it. I’m hoping it. He had a real last good four days. He had a good workout on Saturday.” The 49ers head coach said he couldn’t wait to practice on Wednesday to see if either Moseley or Kinlaw are out there.

Here’s the rest of the injury updates from Shanahan:

LB Dre Greenlaw (groin) – day-to-day

LB Marcell Harris (oblique strain) – should be good by Wednesday

DL Dee ford – (minor ankle sprain) should be good for Week 2

The 49ers have the day off Tuesday before returning to practice Wednesday. I’d expect a cornerback to be added by the time they practice again.
