49ers placekicker Robbie Gould was on the sideline for the team’s first field goal attempt on Sunday, leaving those duties to punter MItch Wishnowsky.

The 49ers marched downfield on their first drive against the Seattle Seahawks for an early touchdown. However, while the team celebrated Ross Dwelley’s first touchdown reception of the season, placekicker Robbie Gould remained on the sideline, and punter Mitch Wishnowsky knocked in the extra point. Fullback Kyle Jusczyzk served as Wishnowsky’s holder.

Soon after the attempt, the team revealed that Gould is questionable to play with a groin injury. Since Gould wasn’t healthy enough to kick the first field goal of the game, it’s hard to imagine him taking the field at all today.

Wishnowsky was seen practicing field goals postgame after a long conversation with head coach Kyle Shanahan. Unlike some other punters, Wishnowsky was not a kicker in college. That limited experience will probably force the offense to be far more aggressive in the red zone and could pose serious problems if the game is close late. On the season, Gould was 3-for-4 on field-goal attempts and had made all 11 extra-point attempts.

Wishnowsky missed his first field goal attempt from 41 yards out.
