49ers vs. Chiefs preseason open thread: 16 starters are inactive tonight

We’re not far off from the San Francisco 49ers making their preseason debut against the Kansas City Chiefs. QB Jimmy Garoppolo figures to get a series or two, but he’ll be without his starting center, running back, tight end, fullback, and left tackle.

The Niners are sitting 16 starters tonight. On defense, the only two starters who are active are Tavon Wilson and Dre Greenlaw.

• S Jimmie Ward
• LB Fred Warner
• OT Trent Williams

Outside of them, the 49ers will be without Ha Ha Clinton-Dix, Jalen Hurd, Elijah Mitchell, MyCole Pruitt, and Mohamed Sanu Sr. Mitchell is a surprise, as he practiced on Thursday.

The captains for the Niners tonight are Dre Greenlaw, Ross Dwelley, and Marcell Harris.

We’ll get to see a lot of the younger guys on the roster get the majority of reps. That’s how it should be for the first preseason game, as the veterans mentioned above have nothing to prove.
