Gerry was signed during free agency this past offseason

The 49ers announced they had linebacker Nathan Gerry on Tuesday afternoon. Gerry signed with the Niners on March 29 of this year.

Gerry did not have a great reputation last season; as Eagles fans will tell you, he was the worst linebacker in football. From coverage to tackling, Gerry left a lot to be desired. He can run, but outside of that, I wasn’t sure what San Francisco saw in him besides potentially adding more speed on special teams.

Gerry did not have any guaranteed money in his contract, so the 49ers save $850,000 in cap savings. Could they be scraping every penny possible to work out a new extension for Fred Warner? They could be.

It could also be a sign that Gerry wasn’t a good fit or on the same level as the young group of linebackers on the roster. James Burgess is technically a veteran, but the youth such as Justin Hilliard, Jonas Giffith, Demetrius Flannigan-Fowles, and Azeez Al-Shaair feel like the type of prospects and athletes you should be on.

Gerry started seven games for the Eagles last season before getting benched due to poor play. I’d rather the team roll the dice on one of the aforementioned linebackers.
