Is Pittsburgh in a bad spot?

The Pittsburgh Steelers’ moves at the quarterback position have been the hottest talking points of the NFL offseason.

After fielding a quarterback room of Kenny Pickett, Mitch Trubisky, and Mason Rudolph last season, Pittsburgh gave the room a complete makeover. The Steelers released Mitch Trubisky in late February. They followed it up by signing Russell Wilson, trading Kenny Pickett to the Philadelphia Eagles, and then trading for Justin Fields. Pittsburgh also signed Kyle Allen, formerly of the Buffalo Bills, and Mason Rudolph signed with the Tennessee Titans.

With a new offensive coordinator in Arthur Smith, as well as all new quarterbacks, the Steelers have upgraded all over the offense, at least on paper. However, Pro Football Network’s Dakota Randall is skeptical of the Steelers’ approach to the quarterback position.

“Pittsburgh Steelers fans will talk themselves into believing Justin Fields can be an effective NFL starting quarterback,” Randall wrote. “The rest of the league would disagree with them. They also might believe Russell Wilson has something left in the tank. Again, the league would disagree. Pittsburgh is in no man’s land at quarterback, hitching its wagons to an aging veteran and a talented but deeply flawed fourth-year pro. There’s a chance this works out, but it’s slim.”

Wilson is coming off a 26 touchdown season with the Broncos in which he was also third in the NFL in yards on passes that traveled at least 25 yards downfield. Fields has 45 total touchdowns over the last two seasons.
