Andy Reid comments on Willie Gay Jr., Josh Gordon’s statuses this week

Kansas City could be adding two high-impact players to the lineup ahead of its game against Buffalo.

Kansas City Chiefs head coach Andy Reid met the media via Zoom conference call on Monday, providing comments on two players of note: second-year linebacker Willie Gay Jr. and the team’s veteran newcomer at wide receiver, Josh Gordon.

Reid on Gay: “There’s a chance”

The Chiefs placed the 23-year-old Gay on injured reserve after he suffered a turf toe injury during the team’s final preseason game against the Minnesota Vikings. He has missed the first four regular-season games of the year.

Gay was eligible to return to the active roster last week, but the Chiefs held him back.

“Theres’ a chance,” said Reid when it came to Gay’s potential activation this week. “He was kind of getting there last week. We’ll see on this, see where he’s at as we go forward here. But I think he’s starting to feel a little bit better, for sure.”

The Josh Gordon call-up?

When the Chiefs originally signed Gordon, 30, it sounded like it would take a few weeks until the club elevated him from the practice squad. That thought changed early Sunday with a report from NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, who noted it might be sooner rather than later.

The Chiefs did not activate the wide receiver for the Week 4 game against the Philadelphia Eagles.

“I’m just going to see how he does this week,” said Reid as it pertained to Gordon. “And talk to him. I haven’t talked to him [Monday], but we’ll just see where he’s at and how he’s feeling. There’s a chance, but there’s a chance that he’s not, also. So I’m just going to play it by ear and see how he feels. Really, it’s more of a comfort thing with the offense. I don’t want to put him in a bad situation out there.”

At 6-foot-3 and 225 pounds, Gordon would be a welcome addition for Patrick Mahomes as the Chiefs face off against the high-powered Buffalo Bills offense led by Josh Allen.

And how about Sunday Night Football at Arrowhead Stadium for a Chiefs’ debut? Not bad.
