On Thursday, former Atlanta Falcons offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach Greg Knapp passed away just days after being struck by a motorist while riding his bike in Northern California.

Knapp, 58, took a job with the New York Jets over the offseason to be the team’s new passing game coordinator after serving three years as the quarterbacks coach in Atlanta.

He began coaching in the National Football League for the San Francisco 49ers in 1997 and would eventually be promoted to the team’s offensive coordinator position in 2001. Knapp later joined the Falcons in 2004, spending three seasons as offensive coordinator before holding the same title with the Oakland Raiders and Seattle Seahawks.

In total, Knapp coached for seven different NFL teams as an offensive coordinator, quarterbacks coach and passing game coordinator. His impact on the game is undeniable after coaching offense at the highest level for over 20 years.

UPDATE: Falcons owner Arthur Blank released the following statement on Knapp’s passing via the team’s Twitter page.

“He was a tremendous football coach who achieved at the highest levels of our game, but more importantly he was a wonderful person who had the love, admiration and respect of those who were blessed to work with him,” wrote Blank.
