The National Football League has a number of unnecessary rules that it continues to hold on to for unknown reasons. Things do seem to be gradually changing, though. This year, the league is expanding its regular season to 17 games, and will continue with last year’s altered playoff format that allows two additional teams to qualify for the postseason.

Another change implemented by the league will allow each franchise to have a secondary helmet starting in 2022. It didn’t take long after the NFL announced this rule change for the Atlanta Falcons to tease a potential return to their red throwback helmets from 1966.

Check out this image the team shared of wide receiver Calvin Ridley wearing the throwbacks below, per the Falcons’ Facebook page.

Atlanta changed uniforms prior to last season but the team proceeded to win just four games, killing most of the enthusiasm around the new design. Ultimately, Falcons fans will be okay with whatever uniforms they wear as long as the team starts winning games again.
