Bears running back David Montgomery has a chip on his shoulder heading into 2021 despite coming off a mini-breakout season, where he was the most dominant running back in the NFL in the final half of the 2020 season.

But Montgomery, who finished fifth in the league in rushing yards (1,070) and scrimmage yards (1,508), feels disrespected by the likes of CBS Sports, who ranked him as the 25th best running back in the league. And Montgomery has vowed to make his doubters pay in 2021.

NFL.com’s Maurice Jones Drew ranked all 32 starting running backs heading into 2021, and Montgomery finally got some well-deserved respect. Although, there is certainly an argument to be made that Montgomery should be even higher than 13th on this list.

Montgomery came on strong late last season, rushing for nearly 600 yards and seven touchdowns over the final six games to finish fifth in the league in rushing yards. If the Bears are to return to the playoffs in 2021, they’ll need a strong running game to help the quarterback (whoever that may be) and the defense. Montgomery has all the tools to pick up right where he left off and prove he’s one of the better young runners in the league.

The scary thing is that, despite a dominant second-half performance, Montgomery believes he can be even better.

“It wasn’t enough for me last year, just knowing the untapped potential that I had within myself,” Montgomery said earlier this offseason.

Montgomery has a chance to not only make his doubters look silly but cement himself clearly as one of the NFL’s best running backs.
