Bears fire former Packers assistant

Luke Getsy, a former Green Bay quarterbacks coach, could return to the Packers in 2024.

On Wednesday, the Chicago Bears announced that they fired offensive coordinator Luke Getsy — but will be retaining some other members of their offensive staff for the 2024 season. Getsy, who was brought in to run a Shanahan-style system, only managed to get Chicago quarterback Justin Fields to throw for 33 touchdowns to 20 interceptions in his two years as a play-caller.

Why is this significant for Green Bay Packers fans? Well, other than the Bears having multiple timelines on their coaching staff now, Getsy does have ties to the current Packers coaching staff.

From 2014 to 2021, Getsy spent all but one year — 2018, when he was Mississippi State’s offensive coordinator — in Green Bay. From 2019 to 2021, he was the team’s quarterbacks coach under head coach Matt LaFleur, earning the passing game coordinator title in 2020.

As we’ve seen in the past, LaFleur is more than willing to give coaches he knows well an opportunity to contribute to the team as an analyst, if a positional coaching gig is not open on the roster. Examples of this include the in-season hiring of Aubrey Pleasant, formerly the Detroit Lions’ defensive coordinator, as an analyst in 2022 and LaFleur’s former Western Michigan teammate Tim Lester as an analyst in 2023.

With that being said, who knows how much longer Tom Clements, the Packers’ quarterback coach, is going to keep coaching? For perspective, Clements — 70 — is only two years younger than Pete Carroll, who just retired as the Seattle Seahawks’ head coach to become an advisor for the team.

Don’t be surprised if Getsy returns to Green Bay, either as an analyst or a quarterbacks coach, next season. I’m sure that working with quarterback Jordan Love, who finished second in the NFL in passing touchdowns in his first year as a starter, would be an easy sell for a coach trying to rebuild his career following the past two seasons in Chicago.
