The Chicago Bears continue to trim their roster down to 53 players, which includes the surprise cuts of quarterback P.J. Walker and offensive lineman Alex Leatherwood.

Following Walker’s release, it all but guaranteed undrafted rookie Tyson Bagent a spot on the 53-man roster. Now, it certainly appears he’s secured the backup quarterback job.

According to Tom Pelissero, the Bears are releasing quarterback Nathan Peterman. The team wants Peterman back on the practice squad, assuming he clears waivers.

Many speculated Chicago would carry three quarterbacks on the roster, with Peterman serving as a veteran presence alongside Bagent. But it seems as if the Bears are confident in having Bagent serve as the backup for starter Justin Fields.

Bagent had an impressive training camp and preseason, where he created competition for that backup job behind Fields.

Now that Chicago doesn’t have to carry three quarterbacks, it frees up an additional roster spot elsewhere.
