Jim Harbaugh is back in the NFL and is set to coach his former team. It just isn’t with the Chicago Bears. Harbaugh has reportedly agreed to leave the University of Michigan to coach the Los Angeles Chargers, a move that has seemed inevitable for weeks and finally came to fruition. Harbaugh spent the last nine years coaching the Wolverines, turning them from a middling team to a juggernaut in the Big Ten. Under Harbaugh, Michigan had a record of 86-25 and made the College Football Playoff each of the last three seasons. He was bounced in the semifinal round during his first two trips before winning the 2024 College Football Playoff National Championship over Washington.

Over the last few years, rumors about Harbaugh returning to the NFL gained steam as he took interviews each of the last two years. This time, however, he found the right fit with the Chargers, as they look to get the most out of quarterback Justin Herbert and get back to the postseason.

Harbaugh’s return has garnered mixed reactions around the league, but for Bears fans, the feeling is one of frustration. For the last few years, many had hoped he would find his way back to Chicago, the organization that drafted him in the first round of the 1987 NFL Draft. It was made clear that wasn’t happening when general manager Ryan Poles retained head coach Matt Eberflus after the 2023 season and claimed he hadn’t even talked with Harbaugh. “I haven’t talked with Jim Harbaugh,” Poles said during his end-of-year press conference a couple weeks ago. “He’s the head coach at Michigan.” Not anymore, and Bears fans are taking to social media to share their angst.
