The Browns reduced their roster from 90 to 85 players.

On Monday, the Cleveland Browns reduced their roster from 90 to 85 players. All teams were required to get down to 85 players by Tuesday at 4:00 PM ET.

Placed on reserve/injured:

  • WR Ryan Switzer (foot)
  • TE Stephen Carlson (knee)

Waived:

  • OG Cordel Iwuagwu
  • LB Montrel Meander
  • *CB Kiondre Thomas (hamstring)

*injury designation

Carlson was nearly a lock to be the Browns’ fourth tight end and is expected to miss the season. Switzer caught a late touchdown pass against the Jaguars, so his injury news is a bit of a surprise. However, given how deep Cleveland is at receiver, he was only considered a practice squad candidate.

Iwuagwu only played four snaps in the first preseason game, the fewest among any active offensive lineman on the team, so it’s not a surprise to see him among the first cuts. Meander had not been practicing with a hamstring injury, and did not play on Saturday. Thomas played over half of the game, but is being waived with a hamstring injury designation.

The Browns’ next roster cuts are due August 24, when they must be down to 80 players. The final 53-man roster must be named by August 31.
