The Bucs’ search for a new offensive coordinator continues as the team has interviewed an eighth candidate in Los Angeles Rams assistant head coach and tight ends coach Thomas Brown. The team announced that interview on Friday. The appeal is that Brown has spent the last three seasons in Sean McVay’s versatile offense.

Brown was a running back at Georgia, splitting time with Knowshon Moreno and became a sixth-round pick by the Falcons in 2008. He was primarily been a running backs coach in college at Chattanooga (2012), Marshall (2013), Wisconsin (2014), Georgia (2015), and Miami (2016-18) where he was also the offensive coordinator.

After a running backs coaching gig with South Carolina in 2019, he jumped to the NFL where he coached running backs with the Rams in 2020. Brown continued in that role but also became McVay’s assistant head coach, which is a role he occupies today. The 36-year old Brown moved from running backs to coaching the Rams tight ends in 2022.

Brown helped the Rams win its first Super Bowl championship at the end of the 2021 season, as Los Angeles defeated the Cincinnati Bengals in Super Bowl LVI, 23-20. The Rams running backs finished 10th in the league, averaging 126.1 rushing yards per game.

In addition to Thomas Brown, Tampa Bay has interviewed seven other offensive coordinator candidates, including Denver quarterbacks coach Klint Kubiak, Minnesota wide receivers coach Keenan McCardell, New York Giants quarterbacks coach Shea Tierney, Jacksonville passing game coordinator Jim Bob Cooter, New Orleans passing game coordinator Ronald Curry, Seattle quarterbacks coach Dave Canales, and Georgia offensive coordinator Todd Monken in addition to Dan Pitcher, who interviewed twice with the team.

Pitcher’s first interview was virtually prior to the NFC Championship Game. His second interview was done in person on Wednesday.

The Bucs may be having some difficulty in finding a new play-caller as the team has just one quarterback on the roster – unproven Kyle Trask, who is entering his third season in the league. Trask has underwhelmed in two preseasons and has seen scant action in the regular season. He was 3-of-9 for just 23 yards in garbage time of a Week 18 loss at Atlanta in which Tampa Bay pulled most of its starters by halftime. That is Trask’s only regular season action thus far in his career.
