The Bucs will host a highly regarded cornerback on an upcoming Top 30 visit. Pewter Report is reporting that Kansas State senior cornerback Julius Brents will be visiting Tampa Bay prior to the 2023 NFL Draft, which begins on Thursday, April 27. He is the first known cornerback to come in for a Top 30 visit with the Bucs.

On the field, Brents is an up-and-comer, evidenced by career highs in pass breakups (four) and interceptions (four) last year. None were bigger than his end zone INT against TCU’s Quentin Johnston in K-State’s Big XII Championship win.

A former Iowa transfer, Julius Brents’ film suggests that he’s a Day 2 pick, possibly in the third round. But he’s had a heck of an offseason between the Senior Bowl and the NFL Scouting Combine, and his athletic profile and high ceiling could push him into the second round.

Brents had a great week at the Senior Bowl and followed that up with supreme athletic testing at the Combine, where he had an informal interview with the Bucs. Brents is a prototypical Todd Bowles cornerback at 6-foot-3, 198 pounds.

The Bucs head coach was in Manhattan, Kansas for the K-State pro day on March 31, where he had the chance to scout Brents and other Wildcats, including outside linebacker Felix Anudike-Uzomah, running back Deuce Vaughn and wide receiver and kick returner Malik Knowles.

Brents, who was a third-round pick in Pewter Report’s third 7-Round Bucs Mock Draft this year, is physical and highly competitive. He had the longest wingspan in NFL Scouting Combine history at the cornerback position at nearly 83 inches. His stock is on the rise after a his athletic testing session at the Combine, where he had a 41.5-inch vertical, an 11’6” broad jump and a 3-cone time of 6.63, which was the fastest of all defensive backs.

Even though the Bucs just re-signed cornerback Jamel Dean, have top cornerback Carlton Davis III under contract for two more years and just drafted Zyon McCollum last year in the fifth round, Tampa Bay can never have enough good cornerbacks due to injuries. Brents could be drafted for developmental depth and special teams this year and eventually turn into a starter.
