Buffalo Bills’ most overrated players

Which players aren’t deserving of their reputation?

With a deep and talented roster and coming off a highly successful regular and postseason run the Buffalo Bills aren’t necessarily immune from rostering players who may not deserve their oversized reputations. That may be because their talent doesn’t match their role on the team, or that their salary isn’t commiserate with their talent. Today, we’re going to have a debate about those players who we think are the most “overrated” on the Bills. Below are four options, but feel free to discuss additional names in the comments.

DT Vernon Butler

After finishing with six sacks and 32 tackles in his final season with the Carolina Panthers, there was some hope that Butler was on the upswing in his career and might even flourish in the Bills’ defense. Even with increased snap counts due to Star Lotulelei opting out of the season, Butler still only managed 18 tackles and no sacks during his debut season with the team. Perhaps worse than the stats is the fact that former undrafted free agent Justin Zimmer outplayed him. The former first-round draft pick took a pay cut in order to stay with the team for a reason.

LB A.J. Klein

Another former Panther, Klein’s struggles in the early and end portions of the season are well documented and, as a part-time player, is an example of an overpaid veteran. Seeing an increased role due to an injury to Matt Milano, Klein just doesn’t offer the same ability in pass coverage. A streak of games in the middle of the season proved that he can be a solid blitzing linebacker, but his limitations always show up on the field.

LB Tremaine Edmunds

Edmunds is by no means a bad player, but he should be considered overrated. The former first-round pick of the 2018 draft can certainly do a lot of good things, but since being drafted he hasn’t been consistent enough to warrant his high selection. Although he’s solid in pass coverage and his speed and size are imposing when he’s kept clean from blockers, his struggles with tackling and the mental aspects of the game leads to negative plays. However, a fully healthy season combined with another year of experience gives hope.

RB Devin Singletary

Always athletically limited, Singletary may be the proverbial jack-of-all-trades tailback. His lack of speed holds him back from being a big-play threat when running the ball. He’s a good receiver, but not much of a threat to linebackers because of that same lack of speed. He’s big, but not a battering ram like his teammate Zack Moss. He’s disciplined in pass protection, but his lack of bulk hurts him against bigger blitzing linebackers. He brings value to any offense, but he may be the team’s fifth or sixth-best offensive weapon.
