How will Rams move forward without him?

LA Rams second-year running back Cam Akers will miss the entire 2021 season with a torn Achilles. It’s disappointing news for the guy who was entering the year as the Rams’ unquestioned starter at the running back position and he seemed poised to be LA’s first 1,000-yard back since Todd Gurley in 2018.

Akers had 224 rushing yards in two playoff games as a rookie, but he was also consistently productive after Sean McVay started to trust him late in the season as the team’s top weapon on the ground. Perhaps Akers could have challenged for a lot more than just 1,000 rushing yards during the season — there was optimism that he’d also be a dual-threat in the passing game — but now his timeline is pushed back to 2022.

Akers sent out his first message post-injury on Tuesday afternoon, telling fans that he hates what happened but is “in great spirits and I understand God makes no mistakes.”

An Achilles injury will sideline Akers for the rest of 2021 and could linger into 2022 training camp. What options will the Rams have now?

We’ve covered a number of them already:

  • Free agent options at running back
  • Trade options at running back
  • In-house options at running back

We also listed two reasons why you shouldn’t worry about LA’s Super Bowl chances based on this recent news.
