Alt was a consensus All-American in 2023 and is arguably the top offensive tackle in the draft. Will he be the next protector of Justin Herbert?

Up to this point, Chargers fans have mostly seen LSU wideout Malik Nabers, Georgia tight end Brock Bowers, and Illinois defensive tackle Jer’Zhan Newton paired with team in most early mock drafts. Today, we’ve got a different name at a less-exciting position, but it’s nonetheless an important one for any NFL team.

In a new mock by CBS Sports, NFL analyst Ryan Wilson believes the Chargers will continue going the route of protecting quarterback Justin Herbert by drafting Notre Dame offensive tackle Joe Alt with the fifth-overall pick.

Here’s what Wilson had to say about the pick:

“The Chargers will have a new coach and GM, but protecting Justin Herbert should remain the priority. Joe Alt will challenge Fashanu for OT1, but if either is available here, L.A. should seriously consider them.”

Alt is listed as a 6’8, 322-pound monolith on the edge. He was named a First-Team All-American by numerous publications, making it his second consecutive honor. He was also a finalist for the Lombardi Award, given to the nation’s top lineman.

According to Pro Football Focus, Alt was the highest-graded offensive tackle in the country in 2023. In three seasons with the Irish, he allowed just four sacks. Originally a tight end at Totino-Grace High School in Fridley, Minnesota, Alt transition almost immediately to offensive tackle before starting all 13 games as a freshman in 2021.

Alt is the son of former Chiefs offensive tackle John Alt who played his entire 13-year career in Kansas City.

I know this is obviously the least exciting option when compared to the other players who will be available around their draft slot, but how would you all feel if the Chargers did in fact continue building the offensive line with Alt? Let us know all of your thoughts below!
