No surprises here.

People, including me, cannot get enough of the Brandon Staley content.

Seriously.

As I discussed this morning in the daily links, Staley really might be the greatest thing to happen to this franchise since…well…Justin Herbert. But the good news is, Herbert is going into just his second year with the Chargers and that’s only one of the many reasons why it’s easy to see Staley succeeding in his first stint as a head coach in the NFL.

In a recent ranking of the new head coaches based on the franchise situations they were hired into, CBS Sports’ Jason La Canfora placed Staley at the top of the seven-coach list. He beat out Jacksonville’s Urban Meyer (2nd) and Nick Sirianni of the Eagles (3rd).

Here’s what La Canfora had to say:

“This is the spot. Stud second-year QB, front office that has assembled abundant talent, under the shadow of the Rams so the heat doesn’t get too hot. Owners who might not spend to the max, but tend to be loyal. Have been to the playoffs not long ago at all. Staley is an expert on the defensive side of the ball, with a bevy of interesting chess pieces available. Having Drew Brees be available to Justin Herbert? Love it. Coaching had been holding them back, but game management is about to improve.”

I think Meyer has as good a case as anyone to claim the top spot, but their lack of a solidified quarterback — no matter how high the expectations are for Trevor Lawrence — will never beat out a bonafide star in the making. That, plus a lack of elite players on either side of the ball doesn’t help their case.

After years of NFL analysts and media members discussing how good the Chargers look on paper year-in and year-out, it may turn out that the one thing keeping them from being a consistent winner was the right coaching staff.

And folks, if that staff isn’t this one, I don’t think I could even imagine what the right one would look like.
