Charles Omenihu gives away 90 streaming subscriptions to Peacock

Not all heroes wear capes; some wear the number 90.

Kansas City Chiefs defensive lineman Charles Omenihu is a man of the people. As such, he is trying to do his part to make sure that all of Chiefs Kingdom has an opportunity to watch the team in the Wild Card Round of the playoffs when they take on the Miami Dolphins this Saturday at 7:00 p.m. Arrowhead Time at Arrowhead Stadium.

The issue with Saturday’s matchup is that if you live outside of the Kansas City metro area, the game is only available on NBC’s paid streaming service, Peacock, making it the first-ever NFL playoff game aired solely on a paid streaming service.

This has caused a lot of backlash amongst members of the fan base who don’t want to have to pay for an extra service to watch their team play. This caused a lot of fans to take to X to air their grievances.

It wasn’t just fans who were upset by the notion that the game would solely be available via a paid service.

Defensive lineman Charles Omenihu said he was on the plane back to Kansas City when he heard the news.

“I was kind of startled a little bit because I was like, ‘Why are we on Peacock?’” asked Omenihu. “Why are we not, like, on national TV? And so I just put my thoughts out, and it went viral.”

Those thoughts were not complimentary.

“I just saw it and was like, ‘Why make people pay to watch the game, but you had one game on NBC?’” explained Omenihu. “I think last year they did the playoff game on ESPN and NBC, I think. So then it’s like now we just switching it up.”

Omenihu followed up his original post with another one that tagged Peacock, asking them to contact him because he had an idea, and Peacock responded.

“Yeah, they reached out to my management team,” said Omenihu. “My management team had kind of talked to them and brought this all to life.”

What they brought to life was 90 free subscriptions to Peacock that Omenihu is gifting to Chiefs fans so they won’t have to shell out the $5.99 that it costs to sign up for the service.

Omenihu said on Wednesday that, so far, 45 of the 90 subscriptions are spoken for. The rest will be chosen on Wednesday evening and will be announced on Friday.
