Wednesday Cheese Curds: Jones finds father’s ashes, Eric Stokes impresses

The Packers’ rookie corner stepped up in a big way in Monday’s win over the Lions.

If his first significant playing time is any indication, the Green Bay Packers may have a hit in Eric Stokes. The team’s first-round draft pick from April played a significant portion of the game during the Packers’ week two win over the Detroit Lions and in general he was more effective than Kevin King has been over the first two games.

King struggled on Monday night, particularly early in the game, but moved into the slot for a significant portion of the contest as the team found a way to get Stokes on the field. That was one of a few schematic and personnel changes that the team made from week one two week two, and there were some tweaks at halftime as well that helped lead to the defense’s turnaround in the second half.

One player who was stellar in both halves on Monday was Aaron Jones, whose four touchdowns matched a career high. Jones lost an item close to his heart on one of those scoring plays, but got a big assist after the game from a member of the Packers’ organization to get that item back.

The Packers’ defense again gave up 17 first-half points on Monday, but because the offense kept it close and took the lead on the first drive of the second half — and because of some adjustments that Matt LaFleur asked for — they were able to lock down the Lions after halftime.

The first-round rookie looked very good in his first extended action, breaking up two passes and allowing just one completion (albeit for a touchdown). That came with Kevin King playing in the slot more often than ever before, something we may see moving forward.

Of course, the pass rush is still a work in progress. The team recorded its first sack of the season on Monday, but it went down as a team sack because Jared Goff fumbled on his own.
