Friday Cheese Curds: Aaron Rodgers is happy with his weapons

The perceived “lack of weapons” has dogged Rodgers throughout his career but the 2021 receiver group is the best he’s had in several years

“Aaron Rodgers has no weapons (except Davante Adams)!”

Anyone still shouting that false refrain in 2021 is so full of bull that they could fertilize Lambeau Field five times.

The Rodgers/weapons debate has been raging for much of the three-time MVP’s career but for this season at least, it should be silent or at least limited to bottom feeding Twitter trolls who should always be ignored anyway.

Outside of Adams, Marquez Valdes-Scantling has had a solid camp and Rodgers praised the receiver for being in the right headspace after an up-and-down 2020 season. A redemption tour of sorts is in order as the Packers face the decision of extending MVS while also trying to make Adams the highest paid receiver in the league.

The new addition (or returning in the case) is Randall Cobb, whose return apparently is what swung the pendulum back in the Packers’ favor when it came to getting Rodgers back from his standoff with the organization. He’s going to be the slot guy that he used to be but he hasn’t played in Matt LaFleur’s offense until now so it will be interesting to see how the coaches utilize him. He can still clearly play as evident in his two years in Dallas and Houston.

Allen Lazard finishes out the top four receivers and he was on pace to have a solid season had he not lost six games with a core muscle injury. He had a breakout game in Week 3 against the Saints and will look to build on that. Lazard is the big physical receiver that is so critical in LaFleur’s offense and has been a willing blocker in the run game.

So to those who still say the Packers have no weapons outside of Adams, you’re wrong and Rodgers himself backs that up with how happy he sounded when discussing his receivers at a press conference yesterday.

As we all know, a smiling Rodgers is a deadly Rodgers to opponents.

There was going to be an open and big competition at wide receiver heading into camp but the return of Cobb rendered that almost moot. The question is now how many the Packers will keep (six or seven) the bottom two or three will likely be limited to special teams duty anyway.

Thanks to the brouhaha in the offseason, any time Rodgers talks it’s going to be a must-listen. As he spoke to reporters for likely the final time in camp, Rodgers praised his receivers as well as singling out MVS for some praise and why he was upset with rookie center Josh Myers at practice.
