Thursday Cheese Curds: Packers undergoing yet another youth movement

Training camp provides ample opportunity for younger players what they can do and perhaps crack the starting lineup

With the arrival of training camp roughly two weeks away, it’s that time of year where we start looking at what players can and need to seize the opportunity camp and the preseason games provide

For the Green Bay Packers, this means a youth movement could be in order. That means they’re expecting big things from their last three draft classes, including this year’s, and there are plenty of candidates that could step into the spotlight.

Running back AJ Dillon seems primed for a breakout year in his first full season as RB2 after Jamaal Williams joined the Detroit Lions in free agency. He gave fans a mouthwatering preview in December when he ran for 124 yards against the Tennessee Titans. That game has fans fired up about a potential Aaron Jones/Dillon tandem. If Dillon can improve as a pass catcher, this could be the best running back tandem the Packers have had in years.

Another player is guard Jon Runyan. With David Bakhtiari’s status for Week 1 still up in the air as well as a potential Elgton Jenkins move to tackle, the ball is in Runyan’s court in terms of cementing a permanent place in the starting lineup. He didn’t allow a sack as a rookie and more than held his own in limited snaps last year. The 2020 sixth round pick could prove to be yet another patented Packers diamond in the rough find.

There also of course is Jordan Love in this conversation as well. Should Aaron Rodgers not report, Love would be the starting quarterback with Blake Bortles likely backing him up. If Love pans out, a lot of the questions surrounding the future of the Packers would disappear. That’s obvious but he can endear himself to the fan base immediately with a solid first season should it come to that, even if he’s forced to play sooner than the team wanted.

The Packers are one of the best organizations in continuously restocking the roster with young talent. With the future of their franchise quarterback in doubt, this is the time to shine for these gifted but raw players.

Don’t forget about Josh Myers either in terms of the youth movement. He could very well start Week 1 at center and he already looks the part of a Green Bay offensive lineman.
