Runyan won’t need the help of a blue ox to potentially become a starter in 2021

There have been many famous families in the NFL: the Mannings, the Matthews, the Shanahan, just to name a few.

They might have to make room for another one: the Runyans.

Green Bay Packers guard Jon Runyan Jr., son of the legendary former Eagles guard who is his namesake, could establish his family name in the upper echelon of football families if he can build on the potential he showed in 2020.

A sixth-round draft pick last year, Runyan was active all 16 games last year and flashed potential when he filled in during his very first game in Week 1 when both Lane Taylor and Lucas Patrick went down with injuries. Runyan also saw more action throughout the season and more than held his own each week.

How good can Runyan be? Well, don’t be surprised if he cracks the starting lineup and be the starting right guard opposite Elgton Jenkins. Should David Bakhtiari still be recovering from his ACL injury, Runyan’s odds of cracking the starting lineup will jump even higher.

He didn’t allow a sack as a rookie either, so that should indicate what Runyan can become. Should he take over a starting guard job, the Packers will have gotten an incredible value out of the second round pick.

Runyan showed a lot of promise as a rookie and if the Packers do indeed move Jenkins to tackle, even when Bakhtiari returns, Runyan can play either side. That versatility has been critical for the line under Matt LaFleur and Adam Stenavich.

A lot hinges on Bakhtiari but should Jenkins remain at left guard, the Packers have all the makings of a strong interior offensive line. The biggest question mark is at center where whomever starts at quarterback will be lining up under someone brand new, most likely rookie Josh Myers.
