Bears Camp Recap: Fields returns, Peters debuts, Defense looking good

Justin Fields returned to practice at Halas Hall one day after sitting out with a groin issue, but judging by the Tweets from those that were at practice, it sounds like Fields struggled again. This makes consecutive rough practices for the Chicago Bears rookie, as he didn’t have a very good day on Tuesday either. According to head coach Matt Nagy, Fields is on track to play in Saturday’s preseason game against the Buffalo Bills, but he may not see as much time as last week against the Dolphins.

That’s because the Bears plan to get starting quarterback Andy Dalton at least a quarter and a half of football to work with the number ones. Nagy did say things could change based on the game flow, but in theory this will let the rookie run the two minute offense to close the half, be the QB1 for their halftime adjustments, then get some third quarter time before giving way to Nick Foles again.

Dalton had a good day at practice yesterday and he followed that up with a fine performance again today.

The overall play from the defense continues to impress at Halas Hall, with several more interceptions for their turnover bucket, plus a bunch of pass breakups as well. The wide outs were also dropping passes again today, which may have been why the Bears worked out receiver Isaiah Coulter yesterday.

Newly signed left tackle Jason Peters made his debut today, and he did so in his familiar #71 jersey as Arlington Hambright gave the number up to the 39-year old veteran. Hambright will now don number 53. Nagy said that Peters may play a little on Saturday, but they are targeting the preseason finale against the Titans for him to get ramped up.

Rookie o-lineman Larry Borom cleared concussion protocol and was back practicing today, and per Nagy, he’ll be in the mix competing at left tackle with Peters and Elijah Wilkinson.

The back surgery for rookie Teven Jenkins went well according to Nagy, and the hope is still that he can return at some point this season. Yesterday Ian Rapoport reported that the procedure to Jenkins’ back is expected to “solve the issue completely.”

One more note about the preseason game against the Bills, Buffalo will not play starting QB Josh Allen, so former Bear Mitch Trubisky will get the start.
