Chiefs sign long-snapper, release wide receiver [UPDATED]

The Chiefs makes some roster moves as the rest of their players report to camp.

As the remainder of their 90-man roster reported to training camp at Missouri Western State University in St. Joseph, Missouri on Monday, the Kansas City Chiefs made some changes to it.

Through their official Twitter account, they announced that wide receiver Chris Finke — whom we had just learned had left Sunday’s practice with an injury — had been waived with an injury designation. The team also announced the signing of long-snapper Drew Scott — and officially announced the re-signing of defensive end Alex Okafor, which had been reported last week.

Finke — who played his collegiate ball at Notre Dame — originally entered the NFL when he signed with the San Francisco 49ers as an undrafted free agent in 2020. He spent time on their practice squad throughout last season. The Chiefs signed him in early May — apparently after seeing him catch balls at Pro Day workouts for quarterback Trevor Lawrence.

Scott — a 26-year-old who played for the Kansas State Wildcats from 2013 through 2017 — is a player to whom the Chiefs gave a workout at the end of the 2019 season. He also spent some time with the Las Vegas Raiders and Dallas Cowboys during their respective 2018 and 2019 training camps — but didn’t make it to either team’s regular-season roster.

Kansas City already has 31-year-old long snapper James Winchester under contract. He will be entering his seventh NFL season — all of them with the Chiefs — in 2021. But he will be a free agent in 2022.

But shortly after the Chiefs announced Scott’s signing, we learned why they chose to sign him now: friend-of-the-site Matt Derrick of Chiefs Digest reported that Winchester has been placed on the team’s reserve/COVID list.

So at least for the time being, the team needs a long-snapper for training camp.
