Curtis Weaver hungry to claim a spot on Browns D-line

Defensive end, who lost rookie season to an injury, looking forward to the start of training camp.

Curtis Weaver’s rookie season came to an end basically before he had a chance to get going.

A fifth-round selection by the Miami Dolphins in the 2020 NFL Draft, Weaver found himself on waivers in late August with a toe injury. While there were reports that the Dolphins were planning to re-sign Weaver, Cleveland Browns general manager Andrew Berry put an end to that by claiming Weaver.

It is easy to see the attraction, as the 6-foot-2 and 265-pound Weaver was the Mountain West Defensive Player of the Year as a redshirt junior with Boise State in 2019, and finished his collegiate career as the conference’s career leader in sacks with 34.

Weaver spent his first season in Cleveland on the injured reserve list, but now as the Browns prepare for the opening on training camp later this month, Weaver is healed and “hungry” to show the Browns what he can bring to the field, according to a story by Ron Counts of the Idaho Statesman.

In addition to lining up at defensive end, Weaver also said he spent some time at linebacker during the recently completed Organized Team Activities.

If healthy, Weaver should have a legitimate chance to earn a roster spot this season. While Myles Garrett, Jadeveon Clowney and Takk McKinley are the top three at defensive end, the competition after that trio consists of Porter Gustin, Cameron Malveaux, Joe Jackson and Romeo McKnight, an undrafted free agent.

A good showing during training camp and the preseason, and Weaver just might be able to sate that hunger.
