Deshaun Watson’s surgery deemed a success

Cleveland quarterback had his broken shoulder repaired on Tuesday and is expected to be fully recovered for the 2024 season.

Cleveland Browns quarterback Deshaun Watson had surgery on Tuesday to repair the broken bone in his shoulder.

The surgery, which repaired a displaced fracture to the glenoid in Watson’s right shoulder, was done by Dr. Neal ElAttrache in Los Angeles, an orthopedic surgeon specializing in sports medicine. The surgery, unsurprisingly, was deemed a “success,” according to a statement released by the Browns on the team website.

Watson injured the shoulder during the Week 10 victory over the Baltimore Ravens. In addition to the broken bone, Watson suffered a high ankle sprain in the game but still was able to go 14-for-14 and lead three scoring drives in the second half to help take down the Ravens.

The team also announced that Watson will begin his rehab on Friday and everyone involved believes he will be fully recovered in time for the 2024 season. Watson will remain in Los Angeles for the first few weeks of his rehab, according to cleveland.com, which is fortuitous as the Browns will be heading to Los Angeles after Sunday’s game against the Denver Broncos to hold practices at UCLA before facing the Los Angeles Rams on December 3.

With Watson out for the rest of the season, the Browns have turned to rookie Dorian Thompson-Robinson as the starter. Thompson-Robinson got off to a good start this past weekend as he led a game-winning drive in the fourth quarter to help the Browns beat the Pittsburgh Steelers.

With his first NFL victory taken care of, DTR will make his first road start this week against the Broncos as the 7-3 Browns look to boost their conference record to 6-2, stake a tighter claim on a playoff berth, and put a dent in Denver’s slim playoff chances at the same time.

Cleveland also finally landed their veteran backup quarterback on Monday with the signing of 38-year-old Joe Flacco, who will serve as a mentor to DTR and if all goes well will not have to take a meaningful snap for the Browns the rest of the season.
