Colin Cowherd Claims the Colts are ‘Split in the Building’ on Starting QB Carson Wentz

Colts’ enigmatic starting quarterback Carson Wentz still has his fair share of supporters and critics alike.

According to ‘The Colin Cowherd Podcast’, host Colin Cowherd believes the Indianapolis Colts’ conviction on starting quarterback Carson Wentz is currently 50-50 at W. 56th Street:

“I think they’re split in the building on what to do with Carson Wentz,” Cowherd said. “I think Frank Reich wants him. He’s one of those quarterbacks. He divides a building.”

“And even when he was vying for MVP years ago, I don’t remember him being this reckless with the football. But, it appears to be worse.”

Now, Colts general manager Chris Ballard is close with Cowherd as a media connection, as he’s appeared several times in the past on ‘The Herd’. Whether this is learned information or the longtime Fox Sports radio host is just speculating is a bit unclear (for what it’s worth, I lean towards the latter given Cowherd’s comments on the Colts collectively on Monday).

At least publicly, the Colts’ top leadership will continue to offer its full support regardless—as it’s still very much in the franchise’s best long-term interest that Wentz does well in Indianapolis.

Colts fans have seen firsthand the highs and lows of Carson Wentz this season, and one doesn’t have to exactly build a flying DeLorean to see that it wasn’t that long ago where Cowherd was singing his praises—pumped up about the Colts’ recent big offseason addition:

At times, he’s flashed like an NFL MVP candidate. Other times, he’s looked like Sam Darnold—who Cowherd said now he is essentially a bigger and more talented version of.

Cowherd didn’t hold back his choice of words, calling Wentz repeatedly ‘reckless’ in playing style and essentially a placeholder for an NFL team’s starting quarterback purgatory (as he claims the Colts would be better off having no viable answer there, so everyone in the building knows there’s literally no chance of having a long-term solution—heeding the call to look elsewhere).

There’s no doubt it’s been a bit of a roller coaster ride with Wentz so far this season.

First, it was his recovering sprained ankles (and initial rust), playing behind the Colts’ porous offensive line and thereby having lukewarm production out of the gates.

Then, after a bumpy start, it turned into his transformation into a pretty good starting NFL quarterback again—only to see him significantly regress this past weekend during a critical loss to the Tennessee Titans—with two careless turnovers that cost the Colts the game late (to be fair though, the called screen pass play near Indy’s own goal line was brutal).

Whether Cowherd’s simply ‘blowing smoke’ remains to be seen, but it does appear that the Colts’ evaluation of Wentz is still very much ongoing—as it very well should be.
